A heavier sample and its maximum
A Pareto upper tail has exponent \alpha=2. By what factor does the scale of the typical maximum change when the sample size is multiplied by 4?
Worked answer (click to show)
The Fréchet scale for exponent \alpha=2 is n^{1/2}. Replacing n by 4n multiplies the scale by \sqrt{4}=2.
