Several measurements on the same unit, over time or under different conditions. They are correlated within the unit, so they are not an independent sample; mixed models and marginal models describe that dependence.

From Random intercepts
Every model so far has taken the responses to be independent given the covariates. Clustering, proximity in space or time, and repeated measures on the same person all break that. Two trees in the same soil can be positively dependent because they share conditions, or negatively dependent because they compete. The negative case is real and, as a correlation matrix for a whole block, surprisingly rigid.
