C34. Fixed and random effects

What are fixed effects and random effects in a mixed model?

Definitions/notation. Fixed effects are unknown coefficients treated as constants; random effects are latent group-specific quantities modelled as draws from a shared distribution, commonly a multivariate normal. Their variance parameters describe between-group heterogeneity, whereas the realised group effects are predicted.
